Berlin - Drehscheibe zwischen Ost und West - war bereits seit dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, vor allem aber nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg, Zufluchtsort und Zwischenstation für Zehntausende von Juden aus Osteuropa, meist Kriegs-, Pogrom- oder Revolutionsflüchtlinge aus Russland, Litauen oder Galizien. Für mehr als ein Jahrzehnt wurde die Stadt zu einem Zentrum jüdischer Migration in Europa. Vielfältig vernetzt und in mehreren Sprachen zu Hause, bewirkten die Migranten aus dem Osten Europas eine Blüte jüdischer Kultur in Berlin und waren zugleich Teil des multikulturellen Stadtraums. Viele dieser, oft mittellosen, jüdischen Familien lebten im Scheunenviertel, nahe dem Alexanderplatz, andere im bürgerlichen Charlottenburg, das aufgrund des hohen russischen Anteils der Bevölkerung auch Charlottengrad genannt wurde. Die Ausstellung »Berlin Transit« erzählt anhand von Kunstwerken, Dokumenten, Fotos und Objekten vom Leben der Emigranten. Der reich bebilderte und durchgehend farbige Katalog begleitet die Ausstellung und vertieft ihre Themen in zehn Essays renommierter Wissenschaftler.
